The draft for the National Educational Policy 2020 contains several innovative ideas for the development of students in Indian educational institutions. Among them, is the idea that along with academic subjects, schools must henceforth also place solid emphasis on vocational studies.
Schools will be required to provide as many alternatives as possible for the students to gain practical knowledge and expertise in one or more vocational skills. In a time where competition for the job arena has increased to epic proportions, and will only continue to do so, this is a welcome move from the government.

The progressive and forward thinking founders of Kalvi Thunai are, so to speak, ahead of the curve. They recognize that while an academic qualification is important, being employable is an essential requirement. Over the last two years they have developed a range of after-school vocational courses for training in practical skills, so that their students are employable as well as academically sound.
Kalvi Thunai offers courses to their students in computers, spoken English, and a variety of other skills - all at very affordable and attractive discount rates. In the words of founder Sivaswamy Bharadwaj “Our objective is to make young adults employable. We are an NGO and we are not running the center as a business at all. We sincerely hope that more and more young people will come forward and participate.”
